to do their jobs from 9 to 5, or an equivalent. Workers stayed with one company for much of their lives, and the companies took care of their employees with
benefits and pension plans. However, thats not the case any more. Globalization means a 24/7 workforce. Furthermore, the drive to reduce expenses
and boost profits has led to corporations drastically shifting their workforces. Telecommuting comes in handy for the worker on the road, or someone who is working from home; it means
that the corporation doesnt have to spring for extra office space. Temporary employees are great because they can be hired when the job flow requires it, then let go when
things slow down. Job sharing, in the meantime, helps promote employee work-life balance; and because job sharing involves two people sharing one job part-time, the corporation doesnt have to spring
for extra benefits. All of this has come about fairly quickly; just two decades ago, bosses rolled their eyes at the idea
of employees working remotely. However, technology has advanced to the point where it is during the past 20 years, allowing information to be transmitted more quickly and efficiently.
Mamaghani (2006) points out that technological advances during the past 30 years have meant that organizations overall have been able to increase global presences, reduce
costs and improve workforce management. His belief is that as technology continues to improve, employees will become more mobile and work more effectively from remote locations through electronic methods (2006).
This will be essential, he points out, in order for a corporation to remain competitive, not just against its local and national competition, but against its international competition as well.
