however, not only has television taken the place of radio, its become an ubiquitous part of our lives, with High-Definition TV providing almost microscopic clarity on the screens, cable TV
and space communications satellites providing channels upon channels of programming (and huge audience fragmentation) and even v-chips to help "block" some of that more suggestive programming from younger minds.
Some of that programming is interesting - though sitcoms, which reached their heyday in the 1970s, are still popular, its reality programming that seems to be attracting the largest chunk
of viewership. Television, these days, isnt just entertainment, its a form of voyeurism, in which viewers can watch almost any facet of a life, from a blooming relationship, to a
weight-loss program, to other intimate details of a particular persons life. But television isnt just television any more - its part of a huge conglomeration known as "telecommunications," the marriage
between phones, computers and the Internet to deliver programming content. Thanks to telecommunications, people can watch television shows and motion pictures on their cell phones, while receiving - and answering
- phone calls through their TVs (and computers). And thanks to legislation such as the Telecommunications Act of 1996, motion pictures companies own television networks and websites, while the websites
are even changing the way we communicate with one another (through e-mail and instant messaging) as well as doing business (via e-commerce). Even the language is changing - texting is
making short-hand of the way we write, with "emoticons" and abbreviations (LOL, WTG, BTW and so on). But the question we need to ask ourselves here is whether technology/telecommunications is
driving societal mores, or whether its society/economics/politics and so on driving the huge advancements in telecommunications. The answer is that society embraces and uses technology when its ready to, and
