outright and argumentative rebellion, to drinking alcohol, to smoking drugs. While parents know that arguments dont hurt (except maybe some feelings), experimentation with alcohol and illegal drugs brings up a
different reaction. Parents and medical professionals know - even if teenagers dont - that use of illegal or illicit drugs can negatively impact the short-term and long-term future of those
who use them. Some teens will just experiment and then stop - knowing all they needed to know. Others, however, experiment and keep on going - and its these others
that parents and medical professionals are concerned about. The media - including television, radio and magazines - are filled with stories about teenagers and young adults dying or becoming severely
mentally impaired because of their use - and abuse - of illicit drugs. Those who are at risk for developing possible serious
drug related problems include those who have a family history of substance abuse, who are depressed, who have low self-esteem, or who believe they dont fit in with the mainstream
(AACAP, 2002). And while using illicit drugs can, in the beginning, make everything seem better, drug use is associated with a variety
of problems including increased risk of serious drug use later in life, school failure and poor judgment which could put teens at risk for accidence, violence, rape and suicide (AACAP,
2002; see also Focus Adolescent Services, 2002). Use of stimulants can ultimately lead to dependence, violence and aggression and malnutrition (due to suppression of appetite) (Focus Adolescent Services, 2002).
But why do these children keep using drugs, despite the fact that there is proof that these chemicals are addictive and dangerous?
