Federal Express? This is an interesting question, as FedEx has not only experienced catalysts for change, but has, in and of itself,
been a catalyst for change as well. As indicated, there was no such thing as "express delivery" of packages before FedEx came on the scene during the early 1970s with
its slogan of "when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight." But, as with anything that is successful, FedExs success attracted
much competition (even from its original rival, the U.S. Postal Service), and as more and more competition flooded into the marketplace, FedEx reinvented itself, moving from simply moving packages from
one end of the country to another, to moving packages around the world. Then it expanded beyond simply moving packages to shifting loads of freight, to becoming a supply-chain management
provider. Competition has also changed the dynamics of the industry. Almost any service these days will get a package from Point A
to Point B overnight. Where FedEx has led the way is in the area of value add, in other words, using technology to help provide more service to customers. So
one answer to this question is that the catalyst for change at FedEx has been the advent of the Internet and the use of technology for supply chain management. Customers
