MySpace and Facebook, people are able to connect with others in a way they never have. Its not uncommon for many "Netizens" to have friends from all over the world;
both friends they caught up with from school and friends they make online through social interaction. Yet despite the active virtual online
community, its safe to say that people are actually more isolated now than they were before the Internet moved into the public domain.
How is this so? Arent we in touch with more people, and able to communicate through more methods such as e-mail and instant messaging? The answer is yes -
and no. A study conducted in 2004 by Duke University sociologists compared data from 1985 to that of 2004 (Hearn). It was found that the number of close confidants listed
by those to participated had sharply declined in the 20-year period (Hearn). The study didnt really delve into reasons for change, but
the researchers speculated that one factor might be the fact that people are spending more time at work - and theyre spending more time on the Internet (Hearn). Though new
technology is putting people in touch with strangers on the other side of the world, its also taking away "face time" from family and friends that might live just down
the street (Hearn). This is not to knock the new technology. The Internet is an interesting phenomenon, allowing a lot of information
to flow into a persons computer at literally the touch of a button. And, as we said above, the Internet also allows us to connect with others.
