such as cigarettes? Cigarettes, it seems, face many taxes, most of which are levied on the consumers. The products are taxed for a couple of reasons - one, to discourage
people from smoking, and two, to help fund anti-smoking campaigns (Stehr, 2007). But the question we need to ask ourselves here
is how - and whether - this cigarette tax actually impacts supply and demand. Knowing the addictive nature of nicotine, can raising prices on cigarettes by a little - or
a lot - really curtail peoples smoking habits? The answer is, it depends on the research you look at. Stehr points out
that, in a variety of studies, men tend to be more "tax sensitive" than women do, at least according to the research. The problem with the research, he points out,
is that it doesnt take into account other factors, such as advertising restrictions, educational campaigns or clean indoor air laws (Stehr, 2007).
However, in additional studies Stehr performed, he found that in other situations, women were more tax-sensitive to cigarettes, and also learned that the taxes impacted lower-income smokers as well
(Stehr, 2007). However, he points out that though higher cigarette taxes are proving to curb smoking among women and lower-income men, that these taxes would have to rise by about
170% to reduce smoking in the lowest-income bracket (i.e., women), to zero (Stehr, 2007). More recently, DeCicca and McLeod (2008) determined that older adult smokers are also sensitive to taxes
