tattoos made them invincible in war, others imbued then with religious meaning. No matter what the reason, the tattoo crazy has returned and with it a curiosity about how the
process is achieved so that the designs do not fade and what the recourses are if one changes ones mind. When one
goes for a tattoo, a design is chosen and the design is transferred to the skin via a stencil. This stencil is created by a machine called a thermal-fax which
produces an adhesive sticker stencil that can be stuck on the skin. This is where the client can get a preview of upcoming attractions by adjusting the position of the
sticker, or walking out the door if they have changed their minds. Most tattoo artists use a machine, or a ink gun.
The ink that one chooses is placed in a small cap near where the needles and tubes are placed on the gun or machine. Ointment is applied to allow the
needle to move more readily over the skin. Early tattooing involved the use of various tools, whatever was available at the time for pricking, scratching or scarring the top layer
of skin. Then, once the scratch was made a dye of some sort would be rubbed into or drawn into the grooves.
Today, precision is made greater through the use of the machines and the guns, and there is a more sterile operation going on than has been afforded in the past.
