Corp. oversees a collection of national and international discount retail department stores offering everything from general goods and apparel, to pharmaceuticals and over the counter drugs, to food (Super Targets). However, given the fact that discount retail is a highly competitive business (with Target competitor Wal-Mart leading the way), the one way in which Target can differentiate itself from the competition is through better customer service. And the way in which it can differentiate itself from that is through better employee management. How does Target treat its personnel? In this paper, weve conducted an audit (i.e., research) of the literature to find out. Unlike Wal-Mart, Target hasnt necessarily made the headlines in terms of diversity problems or lack of payment or hours fudging -- likely as not, because Target doesnt have the so-called "Wal-Mart way" of doing things. Because there isnt a whole lot of literature available specific to Target and human resources management (or management in general), well be looking at literature that discusses general trends when it comes to HR, management and retailing, in addition to focusing on Target as well. Before we continue, its helpful to point out the importance of a well-run workforce on this level -- and the cost it takes to replace it.
