an unique place, reminiscent of feudal Japan, the young protagonist experiences the issues of identity, love and loss set against the backdrop of warlords, assassins and worse as he does
so. Tomasu is a young man of sixteen or so who is part of a community who are called the Hidden. This sect practices their nonviolent faith in secret,
against the edicts of the emperor. Tomasu is spared an untimely death when his love for the mountains takes him away at the very time that his whole village is
attacked by the warlord Iida and everyone is murdered. In shock he almost loses his life as his presence is discovered by Iida and he is pursued. Fate steps in
once again in the guise of a man named, Otori. Lord Otori takes a liking to Tomasu and as such decides to adopt the boy. They change his name
to Takeo. "Thats a common name among the Hidden. Better get rid of it." He said nothing for a while, and then spoke briefly out of the darkness. "You can
be called Takeo"(Hearn 5). Lord Otori has no sons and as such believes that he has been sent Takeo to be his heir. But Takeo is not the only young
person whose life has been turned upside down. Living nearby in a castle is Kaede. She is the daughter of a noble family who were taken captive and held within
the confines of the castle ever since. Kaede has lived there since she was eight. Now, at the age of fifteen, she has been promised to Lord Otori as part
