use systems thinking? If it does not, how could the organization apply this concept? My organization is a small one that operates on
slim margins. Basing decisions on systems thinking is not an option or merely an aspiration to better management, but rather a necessity of continued operation. The companys small
size is an advantage to operating under the principles of systems thinking, because it is immediately obvious how decisions and actions in one area affect another area and even the
entire organization. Obviously such effects can be far less apparent in a large organization where departments are large and may not freely communicate
across department lines. In those settings, freer communication among departments rather than only within them and the activities of cross-functional teams can greatly facilitate use of systems thinking to
address immediate needs in one area while also considering effects of those actions on other areas of the company. 2. How would you open up an organizations receptivity to systems thinking?
There are a host of good reasons for approaching decision-making from a systems perspective, but none will gain managements attention as will providing
a solid business case - i.e., saving money - for approaching decisions and projects from the system perspective. If efficient operation and an improved bottom line are not enough
to gain managements attention, that combined with slower maneuvering in the marketplace should work. The organization cannot operate at maximum effectiveness or efficiency
