Organizations are basically social systems, thus, using a systems thinking approach can provide valuable information about what part of human resource management are working and which arent working. The systems approach can find which components are operating in a vertical hierarchical model and which are working in a horizontal lateral model. The caution all managers using a systems approach need to consider is that systems thinking can lead to a narrow focus with more attention paid to the components than to the whole (Hwang, 1999). Managers cannot forget the goals of the organization; the organizational components are all meant to fulfill that goal (Steele, 2003). Those who criticize the systems thinking approach argue the whole is forgotten in the analysis because managers become too focused on breaking down the system into smaller and smaller parts (Steele, 2003). Such a result would be the result of task analysis, not systems analysis. Those who do this do not understand systems thinking. When explaining the difference between traditional analysis and systems thinking, Aronson (1998) said: "Systems thinking, in contrast, focuses on how the thing being studied interacts with the other constituents of the system-a set of elements that interact to produce behavior-of which it is a part." The key is to remain focused on the interactions, how one thing interacts with another to form the whole of what is happening today. Systems thinking is very effective with, "those [problems] involving complex issues, those that depend a great deal dependence on the past or on the actions of others, and those stemming from ineffective coordination among those involved" (Aronson, 1998).
