emerged from the field of systems dynamics. Jay Forrester, an MIT professor, began work on this in 1956 with the intention of finding "a better way of testing new ideas
about social systems" (Aronson, 1998). Systems thinking makes a persons understanding about social systems explicit rather than vague and general (Aronson, 1998). The systems thinking approach provides senior management the
necessary tool to see how different parts of the system interact and affect other parts of the system (Aronson, 1998). Bellinger explained systems thinking as "an approach for developing models
to promote our understanding of events, patterns of behavior resulting in the events, and even more importantly, the underlying structure responsible for the patterns of behavior" (2004). To understand anything,
we must first understand its underlying structure (Bellinger, 2004). The first premise in systems thinking is to realize that organizations are basically social systems. Using a systems thinking approach
can provide valuable information about which parts of any activity are working and which arent working. The systems approach can find which components are operating in a vertical hierarchical model
and which are working in a horizontal lateral model. When explaining the difference between traditional analysis and systems thinking, Aronson (1998) said: "Traditional analysis focuses on the separating the individual
pieces of what is being studied . . . . Systems thinking, in contrast, focuses on how the thing being studied interacts with the other constituents of the system-a set
of elements that interact to produce behavior-of which it is a part." The key is to remain focused on the interactions, how one thing interacts with another to form the
whole of what is happening today. Systems thinking is very effective with, "those [problems] involving complex issues, those that depend a great deal dependence on the past or on the
