at the behaviour of the individual not as isolated and detached, but as part of a larger system in relation to interactions and relationships. The concept is not limited to
human behaviour. Systems theory was developed by a number of theorists in the 1950s including Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Margaret Mead, Kenneth E. Boulding, Anatol Rapoport and Gregory Bateson (Banathy,
1996, Bateson, 1979). This is a concept that may be seen as trans-disciplinary or multidisciplinary as it is not limited to only certain areas of study and today may be
seen in many disciplines, from ontology and engineering and philosophy and biology and even in areas such as cybernetics, computing economics and political science (Laszlo, 1992, 1976).
