drive, or security issues may requisite hardware solutions. While a virus can never truly hurt the hardware directly, it is true that tough security issues sometimes requisite hardware solutions. It
is also important to attack security problems at the basest level possible. That is, if security can be met at the kernal level, the computer is better protected.
First, it should be noted that security at the kernal-level of functionality is important ("Netop" 1). Functionality must be "driver-centric" and that actually refers to the fact that the
firewall loads and turns like a kernal mode driver so that the computer may be protected even prior to Windows booting (1). Stages known as rings have to be created
from ring 0 which is the kernal level through ring three which is the user level (1). It is the latter level with which most people are aquainted. Sometimes, applications
will load the drivers at the kernal level and soon afterward the communication between software and hardware will begin (1). Others will start at either 1 or 2 (1). If
a computer is attacked at the kernal level, and the problem is detected, the computer can prevent the software application from opening (1). This type of protection goes deeper than
more superficial protection can muster. Another way that computers may be protected is with the use of external hard drives. In fact, it is noted that such drives protect computers
from two threats which are accidental file deletion and failure of the primary drive (Bass 45). Two advantages of backing up with a CD or DVD is that one
does not have to worry about contracting a Trojan Horse or virus, and that is a risk for any user (45). Clearly, the back up drive is a hardware option
