Systems integration includes all systems within an organization and is not limited only to electronic information systems. Though electronic information systems play a crucial and highly visible role, there are other necessary systems and they all need to be integrated in order for the organization to realize the greatest benefit from its information assets. "Integration can be achieved at any level and using any technology" (Mische, 2001; p. 8). These other necessary systems include "the processing environment, technologies, human performance and business processes" (Mische, 2001; p. 8). Each of the five essential attributes that Mische (2001) share the electronic component as their central feature. Integrated systems are functionally and technically compatible; "relatively transparent to users" (Mische, 2001; p. 8); standardized across the organization; uniform in data meaning and appearance; and scalable and portable. Though the electronic component provides the common denominator, it is a means to an end, rather than the end itself. 2. Three Myths of Systems Integration 1. "Systems integration is a purely technical issue" (Mische, 2001; p. 8); 2. "Systems integration drives organizational change and business process reengineering" (Mische, 2001; p. 9); and 3.
