more information on using this paper properly! Paper One: Exploring Systems Controls Proper systems analysis and design is about more than simply tailoring a system to meet the
needs of a client. It is not simply an additive art wherein one creates "features", situates them within an interface, and calls it a day. Rather, the process of systems
design requires the careful construction of system controls; a subtractive art focused on establishing the limitations of a system, so that capacities that are beyond client needs or that might
interfere with client needs are not inadvertently accessed or invoked. This paragraph helps the student explain what system controls are. System controls are elements designed into an information system
which are intended to "control" some aspect of the systems operation and access. For instance, an interface itself is a form of control in that it sets limitations upon how
the user can interact with a system. By the same token, a password system might also be a control, as would a subroutine buried deep within the code that prevents
operator mishandling from invoking critical problems within the system itself and possible causing a crash. These controls are also useful for managing changes to IT systems, ensuring that changes are
"controlled on the basis of documented change management procedures", thereby reducing the amount of risk inherent in altering an information system post-deployment (National Audit Office, 2004). Control systems are
critical to systems design because they help in "ensuring the integrity of information systems" (Gallegos & Senft, 2008). This is a simplification of the primary importance of such controls, but
