Introduction The following essay will critically evaluate the following statement: Most ideas representative of the systems approach to management helps todays managers understand their organizational internal and external environment.
This shall be done by providing a brief definition of the systems approach to management, the external environment and the internal environment. Using reference materials and academic sources, the paper
will then discuss why and how the systems approach to management helps todays managers understand their organizations internal and external environments in order to help the organization achieve their aims

its environment" (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005). The systems school of management, which was initiated in the 1960s, proposes that organizations are open systems, they transform inputs into outputs
(Encyclopedia of Management, 2006). An open system has four major components: inputs; processes; outputs; and feedback (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005). Inputs include both human and material resources, e.g.,
raw materials (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005). The transformation processes that turn inputs into a finished product include both "technological and managerial processes" (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005);
the outputs is the act of putting the finished products into the environment (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005). Feedback is what makes the system open and ever-evolving because the
feedback is the reactions from consumers or others in the environment (Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2005). Jarvis (2005) explained: "Feedback involves system outputs looping and returning as further inputs
into the system." The feedback should be used as a type of evaluation regarding the quality of the product or service and the performance of the system (Jarvis, 2005).
