more prosperous that the period we are now leaving. We have seen much bloodshed and anger, which has resulted in little, as a nation we have stood our ground,
and now it appears we have the chance for peace within the country, for this reason we are opening the peace talks with Israel. As a nation we have
shown ourselves to be strong and determined, however now it the time for us to recognise that we have gained much in that determination, and that to continue to gain
we must now start talking. This move has surprised many, including Israel and the United State (Shafer 1). This surprise will help us, but in trying to achieve the peace
we must also be careful and ensure that promises are kept and that the media are handled correctly. This type of argument would be representative of the type of response
one may get from the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Sharaa, or the President Hafez Assad. The determination of Syria that any peace talks should include the return of the Golan
Heights has been very close to the hearts of the Syrian people. There are many reasons behind this peace overture by the Syrians. They have been reassured that a
return of the Golan Heights and the increasing confidence and acceptance of the Clinton administration and its ability to broker an acceptable peace deal (Prusher 6). Other factors which have
now helped push the talks have been to desire to regain the Golan Height along with the economic conditions of the country and the Presidents concern over the state he
will leave the country in (Prusher 6). The war between Israel and Syria has been officially in place ever since the formation of Israel in 1948 (Prusher 6).
