This looks at the political, economic, social and technological factors that influence the commercial environment. If we consider the country of Syria and apply this model we will see how
this model gives us a very good and comprehensive understanding of the country. Political Factors The government is a republic that is held under a military regime,
and has been since 1963 (CIA, 2002). The full name of the country is Syrian Arab Republic, known locally as Al Jumhuriyah al Arabiyah as Suriyah (CIA, 2002). The
country became independent in 1946 from the League of Nations mandate which was administered under the French (CIA, 2002). Suffrage is
not based on gender, it is universal at the age of 18, and the president is elected by the electorate for a period of seven years. We may argue that
although there appears to be a limited democratic system, that this is not really the case as there is limited opposition. The last election was held in 2000, and the
current president Bashar al-Asad gaining 97.29% of the votes. This indicated a less than democratic process. However in finite terms the country is seen as a democratic country.
Administratively, the country is divided into 14 regions; " Al Hasakah, Al Ladhiqiyah, Al Qunaytirah, Ar Raqqah, As Suwayda, Dara, Dayr az Zawr, Dimashq,
Halab, Hamah, Hims, Idlib, Rif Dimashq, Tartus " (CIA, 2002). However, all are under central control. The legal system can be seen
