Some are coming to be more difficult to treat as we overuse antibiotics to the point that they lose much of their effectiveness. As is the case with HIV/AIDS, the best approach to STDs is prevention. SYPHILIS * This is one of the oldest known STDs. It is a bacterial infection, meaning that it may respond to antibiotic treatment. There are several ways to contract syphilis: 1. Unprotected sexual contact. 2. Childbirth in which the mother passes the disease to the child. 3. Bacteria can enter through cuts and other breaks in the skin. 4. Bacteria live in the sores that syphilis causes. SYMPTOMS Sores form on the body during early stages of infection, but then disappear. This can lead the individual to believe that the illness has gone away too, when it certainly has not. Sores. The sores that syphilis causes are called chancres (pronounced "cankers").
