for many centuries, confounding society in many ways, not unlike AIDS today. The following paper examines the disease, its causes, and treatments. Syphilis According to the CDC (2004), "Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has often been called the great imitator because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases." It is a disease that affects a great number of people, and a disease that sees increases in some populations and decreases in others. The CDC (2004) indicates that in the United States there were more than 32,000 cases reported in 2002. The fact that the CDC makes note of the reports of health officials indicates they may be contacted and kept up to date with the disease, though they may also simply gather information together. It does, appear, however, that their language indicates they are informed of the cases in the country. In returning to the prevalence of syphilis, the CDC (2004) also indicates that the number of infants born with syphilis declined from 2001 to 2002 but that in recent years there seems to be an increase in the number of men giving it to other men (CDC, 2004). The amount of men who have the disease appears to be 3.5 times higher than women (CDC, 2004). The disease is transmitted through sexual contact, as well as through pregnancy involving a woman with the disease: "Syphilis is passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore.
