Gospels in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark and Luke, so much alike? Why do they have such similar literary characteristics? In many cases, the same words are used when describing
the events. That should not be a cause for any confusion since the three authors were reporting the Words and actins of Jesus Christ. One would expect there accounts to
be alike especially when citing Jesus Himself. The order of the events is very similar in these Gospels but again, we should expect them to be. One point that the
NIV Study Bible makes is that none of the Gospels report events in the chronological order in which they occurred.1 In the introduction to the Synoptic Gospels, the NIV reports
that 91 percent of what is in the Gospel of Mark is also in the Gospel of Matthew and 53 percent of what is in the Gospel of Mark is
in the Gospel of Luke.2 Looking at it another way, only 31 verses in Marks Gospel is not found in either Matthew, Luke or both.3 Johns Gospel is not very
much like these three at all. It is these similarities that led to these first three Gospels being called the Synoptic Gospels. The word synoptic. Breaking down the word, syn
means together with and optic means seeing.4 Other scholars have simply translated the word synoptic as meaning with the same eye.5 Taking this to practice, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark
and Luke can be laid out side by side, verse by verse so that they can be seen together. In this way, the student can see the remarkable similarities as
well as the differences.6 One of the reasons the question of the Synoptic Gospels Problem is asked in the first place is because it has an impact on certain beliefs.
