relations are important to the Arab peoples. Discussion Definitions of syncretism on the Web vary, but all have to do with reconciling philosophies, beliefs, or other traits so that two
cultures can become one and meld effectively. Websters defines syncretism as "the combination or reconciliation of differing beliefs or practices in religion, philosophy, etc., or an attempt to effect such
compromise." It would be possible to apply this to immigrants to the United States, who usually try to enter the mainstream culture and preserve their ethnic distinction at the same
time; in this context it is usually referred to as "assimilating," but the principle is the same. The reason why syncretic relations are important to the Arab peoples is that
there is really no such person as a "typical Arab." Arabs are nomadic peoples and constantly moving doesnt lend itself to developing a single culture based on geographical proximity to
one another. The way in which the various cultures come together and what that means for a society is found in Albert Houranis book A history of the Arab peoples.
In the book, he tells the story of Abd al-Rahman ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), whose family had moved from Arabia to Spain and settled in Seville; from there the family moved
to Tunis, along with a number of other families with "a tradition of culture and state service" (Hourani & Ruthven, 2002, p. 1). Families like this "formed in the cities
of the Maghrib (the western part of the world of Islam) a patriciate whose services were used by the local rulers" (Hourani & Ruthven, 2002, p. 1). Ibn Khalduns great-grandfather
