purification perhaps. In Kate Chopins "The Story of an Hour" and Flannery OConnors "Revelation" we are presented with two short stories that offer us symbols. The symbols are, for the
most part, quite subtle and must be searched for actively. The following paper examines symbols in these two stories and how these symbols add to the complexity and depth of
the stories. The Story of an Hour and Revelation In "The Story of an Hour" we have a woman who has a heart condition. We see this in
the beginning and we see it in the end. However, by the end of the story we do not see this as an actual physical disorder, or perhaps not only
as a physical disorder, but something that is clearly related to her heart in terms of love and freedom and identity. There are the symbolic images of a heart and
this woman who believes herself free, only to find she is not, suddenly dies: "When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills"
(Chopin). This image clearly drives home the fact that the heart was a symbol, a symbol of her confinement and of her hope. The heart is a very powerful symbol
that truly carries throughout the story. Another symbol in Chopins story occurs when the woman is contemplating the fact her husband is
