Von Huben 7/2010 Please Introduction The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is one of the most frightening short stories ever written. Jackson begins with a description of a gorgeous summer day and subtly weaves a web of horror until she arrives at the storys horrific end. This paper discusses the symbolism of Mr. Summers, Mr. Graves and Mrs. Hutchinson and what part they play in the story. It argues that the men represent authority and that they carry out a ceremony that has long since become pointless, while Mrs. Hutchinson is the victim of male violence. Discussion Not to put too fine a point on it, the villagers in this story hold a lottery every year to make sure they have a good growing season. During this lottery, every person draws a slip of paper and the one who gets the black spot is stoned to death. In other words, they are performing a human sacrifice to propitiate the gods of the harvest, a practice that may have been common in ancient cultures but has no place in modern society. There are many lines that suggest it should be abandoned: people no longer remember the ritual exactly, the box is battered, the words forgotten (Jackson). But they adhere stubbornly to this useless ceremony, and once a year, a totally innocent victim is stoned to death. In the world of the story, Summers and Graves represent authority and tradition.
