Three short stories which offer different types of setting, and thus different forms of symbolism, are "After Twenty Years" by O. Henry, " A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery OConner, and "The Blue Hotel" by Stephen Crane. In the following paper we examine each story separately in regards to their symbolic settings. After Twenty Years This incredibly short story takes place in essentially one single spot, a location within a city that is right in front of a hardware store that used to be a restaurant. However, we are introduced to the block, or the area of this city, first through the presence of a policeman. The time is almost 10 p.m. and the author presents us with a very powerful, and perhaps quickly overlooked, description of the area. In this description we are provided with a subtle look at the story we will hear. The description is as follows: "Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an all-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed" (Henry 69). In this particular line we see that the area in which the hardware store stands is one that is long since seen its days of innocence and productivity. It is a region of the city that is now long dead. This offers us an introduction into the relationship we will see for we find out that the man waiting in the doorway of the hardware store is there to meet a friend.
