going on in her life, ends up working at a fishing lodge in a bit of Hitchcock environment. While this is no horror show, there is certainly reason to see
the setting as rather frightening. For one, the bosss wife Vera is not so keen on her arrival. In fact, Vera is extremely jealous. This is not good, but the
two do become friends in an odd sort of way. To an extent, Maggie is helpful as she understands the depths of Veras despair. This second marriage that Maggie leaves
ends rather abruptly. It is not as if Maggie was not contemplating the move for some time, but until she could muster the courage, she would never leave. This is
true of many women. It takes a great deal of abuse before a woman will finally leave a marriage. After all, marriage is sanctioned in society and it is hard
to do. The fact that she does walk out the door at some point also suggests a "before" and "after" effect. Maggie could stand it no longer, but she does
not leave in a rage. She may be nervous but one would have to admit that she is calm. Yet, the move would be important to the scheme of things
and the fact that she does make the transition herself--no one is dragging her nor does she leave bloodied or battered--is indicative of the stronger persona for this important main
character. Nell Severance is a friend of the protagonists and it is her beautifully crafted gun with the pearl handle that is the Swamp Angel and to some extent, this
gun is meaningful to Maggie. Of course, the title of the book is Swamp Angel, so some might see an added significance. The gun is named Swamp Angel but one
