has been the subject of examination for women with mental illness and a work that simply serves to educate and entertain (Geller, 2004). Perhaps more than anything else it is
a work that truly brought into more realistic focus the troubles of women at the turn of the 19th century, in a society run by and for men. The following
paper examines the symbolic elements within Gilmans short story. Symbolism in The Yellow Wallpaper In first examining the symbolic nature of this particular work it seems important to
discuss Gilmans own examination of the reason for writing it, a symbol of expression in and of itself. She had suffered from periods of depression and confusion, although never like
the woman in her story. She was told to "live as domestic a life as far as possible, to have but two hours intellectual life a day, and never to
touch pen, brush, or pencil again as long as I lived. This was in 1887" (Gilman [2], 1913). She did as she was told for three months "and came so
near the borderline of utter mental ruin that I could see over" which clearly makes her story a symbolic representation of her own experiences (Gilman [1], 1913). She was, however,
saved by a friend and turned to writing which greatly changed her entire perspective, giving her "some measure of power" (Gilman [1], 1913). She then wrote the story to help
others, to educate physicians about the condition they were mistreating (Gilman [1], 1913). In this simply examination of the reason for writing the story, and the story of Gilman
herself, one sees that the story is symbolic of her own experiences, that it is symbolic of many struggles that existed for women at the turn of the 19th
