classic "quest" tale; the description of a mans journey through a strange new world, in this case, Detroit, Michigan. This paper briefly describes some of the symbols Baxter uses, and
how they support his theme of alienation and the search for understanding. Discussion Baxters stories are not wild flights of fancy; they are quiet but intense and focus on the
inner lives of the characters. Here, a young Swedish engineer named Anders is sent to Detroit to present his work on metals to an auto manufacturer; at the same time
he wants to see the city and understand it. Never did such a simple idea turn into such a monumental task! There are clues to Baxters thinking in the title
of the story and in the title of the collection in which it appears, A Relative Stranger. The term "disappeared" is probably most often thought of in connection with the
political extremism found in some Latin American countries in the latter part of the 20th century. There, political activists and others who were classified as "enemies of the state" were
simply made to disappear, never to be seen again. They came to be known as the "disappeared"-people who vanished without a trace. The collection of stories also has a suggestive
