coming of age. It is the story of society, of the ignorance of humanity, and the story of a boys love and passion for horses. The following paper examines the symbolism presented in this particular story. I Want to Know Why As mentioned, this particular story has a great deal to do with horses, and how much the narrator is in love with horses. In fact, this young man is so immersed in the world of horses that before we get to the end of the story, even if we have no interest in horses, we will find some power that he speaks of in these creatures. Horses can be symbolic of several things in this particular story. They can represent purity, innocence, and also puberty and a sense of awakening. He notes, often, that he has always been crazy about horses and he indicates that from the time he can remember, perhaps, he has always run off to watch the horses at the stables. He states, "Theyre beautiful. There isnt anything so lovely and clean and full of spunk and honest and everything as some race horses" (Anderson). In this we see how horses are quite representative of a purity, as well as an innocence. They are pure creatures and seeing them run or even trot, or perhaps even exist, makes this young man incredibly happy and content. They represent all that is good and pure to the boy. They also represent a sort of awakening, especially considering the boy is 15 when he is telling this story. He illustrates how seeing a good horse puts a lump in his throat: "It brings a lump up into my throat when a horse runs" and when he sees one particular horse he says, "Sunstreak is like ...
