the play one can really better understand the play and especially the characters. The following paper examines the symbols in the play as they illustrate aspects of the characters.
Symbolism in Pinters "The Dumb Waiter" One particular symbol is that of a black tea cup and a black saucer that has
a white ring. The black coloring, which dominates, can readily represent the strong pressure put on the character of Gus, who is always surrounded by a darkness that is represented
in the character of Ben, his partner, and Wilson, the man who controls what they do and who they kill. Gus is the purest of the three characters and yet
he is surrounded by a dark and oppressive reality that keeps his purity from growing and shining. It could also be argued that in this threesome of men, they each
represent a third of a whole. Gus is not part of the darkness, which perhaps consumes 2/3 of the coloring of the cup and saucer. Gus is the 1/3, the
1/3 that is white. Another symbol that involves Gus is the window. Gus is always asking questions and seeking something new, some
new intelligence, some new experience. He states that he would like to have a window in the room so he could look outside. He longs to witness something other than
his job and Ben and the people he kills. He wants the window, a symbolic item that speaks of seeing clearly, in a way that can make the viewer or
