The story is not intended merely as a grotesque fantasy, however; rather, Kafka makes masterful use of symbols throughout the tale that guide the reader in dissecting the underlying themes
of the story, namely that of the absurd anxiety inherent in the human condition, and the fundamental gulfs and divisions that exist between people. In portraying this theme, Kafka uses
a variety of symbols and narrative devices. For example, the use of doors throughout the story is utilized as a metaphor for the barriers that exist between the protagonist Samsa
and society, his family, and ultimately the human world entirely. This paper will examine those symbols and their use within the story, appealing to both psychoanalytical interpretations of the story,
as well as the expert analysis of critics who reject a psychologically-oriented analysis. This paragraph helps the student provide a basic summary of the story to provide a grounding
context for the rest of the paper. The novel begins with a famously matter-of-fact presentation of Gregor Samsa waking up to find that hes transformed into a giant insect. His
entire experience with reality is thus utterly transformed, and he has immense difficulty even rolling out of his bed. Despite this, Samsas preeminent concern is how he will explain this
difficult matter to his boss, if he is in fact even able to get to work at all. This reflects the protagonists dire situation: he is trapped in a thankless
position as a traveling salesman because he provides the sole financial support for his family: his mother, father, and sister Grete. Realizing that Gregor has woke up late, his family
comes to check on him, but Gregor is incapable of opening the door. When his supervisor from work arrives, he finally uses his mandible to work the lock open, but
