narrative. There are many potent examples of Hemingways masterful use of this prose style, but perhaps one of the most succinct and well-regarded is his early short story, "Hills Like
White Elephants". This paper will explore how Hemingways style, along with the use of setting and symbols, works to promote a complex theme with a very economic style. This paragraph
helps the student begin to explore the primary themes in the work, as well as the setting. The title of the work refers in one sense to the setting where
the story takes place, and indirectly to the major problem in the main characters lives: the pregnancy of Jig and her American boyfriends efforts to persuade her to have an
abortion. Early in the story, as the couple are seated at a train station, Hemingway describes the setting of the story using subtle language that suggests contrasts and duality; there
are two rails that stretch into the distance, two sides to the valley, and two main characters (Hemingway, 2011). The contrast in each of these dualistic aspects of the setting
reflects the dichotomous void that exists between the two central characters; just as the rails go in two different directs and there is a dry side of the valley as
well as a fertile side, Jig and her boyfriend could not be at a more divisive point in their relationship. This duality is reinforced most strongly when Jig makes the
