Rodgers, December 2010 To Use This Paper Properly, Please Introduction The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story filled with many images and many forms of symbolism. It is a rich story and a story whose symbolism can be read in many ways. One of the most obvious elements of symbolism involves the scarlet letter itself. Other symbols in the story are the rosebush and the scaffold. The following paper examines the three symbols and their symbolism. Symbolism in Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter The first symbol to be examined is the most obvious, the scarlet letter which is a large letter "A" that Hester must wear to show everyone she is an adulteress. It almost seems a beautiful thing in the way the narrator describes it: "On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A" but yet it was "greatly beyond what was allowed by the sumptuary regulations of the colony" (Hawthorne Chapter II). Interestingly enough, symbolically, the style of the letter was too ornate for the style of the colony just as her behavior was too ornate, too passionate, for the colony. Her behavior is symbolized in her letter and her letter clearly symbolizes her behavior, especially considering it is made in red cloth, a color of passion as well as fire, which can represent the fire of redemption found in religion.
