present. This novel is one that seems to seek some answer for the modern man, Lyman, who is one of the primary focuses of the story, and delving into meaning
both personal and social. AS is often the case with stories that possess such a theme, such a search, there are many examples of a symbolic nature. The following paper
examines the symbolism in this story. Symbolism in Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner While this story offers up many elements that one could argue are symbolic, this
paper will focus on only a few. The focus will be how the story offers the symbolism of pride, rigidity, and how humanity (history) repeats itself. Pride Lyman
is clearly attempting to find answers to his own dismal existence, especially as it involves his failed marriage. In order to find some answers to his questions he chooses to
delve into the history of his ancestors, primarily his grandmother and her husband whom Lyman seems to think had a good marriage. In the character of Lyman one is perhaps
led to feel some sort of sympathy for him because he is alone and in a wheelchair. But, this sympathy is quickly dismissed because there is a very powerful symbolic
theme of pride that runs in Lyman and his ancestor, as well as other characters. In the work the author notes many instances, subtly, wherein pride plays a very
important role. While the pride seen is very simple and perhaps common, there is the symbolic relationship between Lyman and his ancestor and the power of pride in resulting in
