This is a 6 page paper on the symbolism found in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” and David Henry Hwang’s play “The Sound of a Voice”. While Orwell is fairly direct in his symbolic satire of the Russian Revolution in “Animal Farm”, Hwang is somewhat more subtle in the symbolism used in his approach for the portrayal of the changing roles and relationships between men and women.

the writers were trying to accomplish by incorporating symbolism into their works is important. Orwell is fairly obvious with his symbolic satire of the Russian Revolution. Hwang, on the other
hand, is somewhat more subtle in his approach describing the multiple levels of intimacy and understanding between a man and a woman. George
Orwells "Animal Farm" is a fun story relating the events which surround a farm, somewhere in England, when the pigs decide to lead a revolution based on their theory of
"Animalism". After ridding themselves of the farms owner, Mr. Jones, the pigs make up a list of seven commandments to help them run the farm after the revolution. The commandments
are: 1) Whatever goes upon two legs is the enemy, 2) Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings is a friend, 3) No animal shall wear clothes, 4) No
animal shall sleep in a bed, 5) No animal shall drink alcohol, 6) No animal shall kill another animal, and 7) All animals are equal (Animal Farm, 2002).
Although the animals have taken the stance that "Four legs good, two legs bad" and managed to defend the farm against an attempt by
Mr. Jones to reclaim it, dissention among the pigs begins to develop. In addition, while the other animals are working hard to construct a windmill the pigs have designed, their
food rations diminish while the pigs continue to grow fat. The pigs rationalize their elevated status is because they are running the farm and soon begin to break the commandments
