Throughout the play the reader/viewer is presented with many symbols and elements of imagery that illustrate many aspects about the family and the story. The following paper examines the symbolism and the imagery presented in Williams play The Glass Menagerie. Symbolism and Imagery in The Glass Menagerie One of the most prominent elements of symbolism in the play is the fire escape. For the most part this is the only way the characters leave the apartment. Obviously they have a front door, but they never seem to use it for the only person who ever really seems to go anywhere is Tom and Tom always uses the fire escape. The term "escape" is quite obviously symbolic in itself for a fire escape is used to escape from critical dangerous situations. Tom constantly uses this to remove himself from the family, symbolically very dangerous to him. Tom is a young man who works and supports the family and then goes to the movies. He must escape from his family and when he isnt working he retreats on, or through, the fire escape so that he can hopefully connect with the real world enough so that he is not mired in the dysfunctional and fantasy world that his mother and live in. In Williams introduction to the play, wherein he is describing the setting, one really sees the powerfully symbolic nature of the fire escape: "The apartment faces an alley and is entered by a fire escape, a structure whose name is a touch of accidental poetic truth, for all of these huge buildings are always burning with the slow and implacable fires of human desperation.
