a story filled with symbolism and allegory. The following paper examines and discusses the symbolism and allegory found in "Young Goodman Brown." Symbolism and Allegory in "Young Goodman
Brown" Perhaps first and foremost, as noted in the introduction, the story of Brown is one that involves a journey. But, this journey takes place on many levels. As such
this journey, a physical one, is also symbolic of an inner journey as well. One critic notes that, "It is also a symbolic night journey into what Hawthorne called the
universal heart, a journey which Hawthorne implies, all men must take if they are to understand themselves" (Waggoner). Apparently Hawthorne believed along the same lines as Proust in that an
individual only found wisdom and knowledge of themselves after they had taken a journey in the wilderness (Waggoner). In Hawthornes story this is truly the case and it is very
symbolic of a mans journey into the unknown depths of his mind and the world that surrounds him. Such a perspective also brings into play the symbolic presence of
the Puritan faith within the story. One author notes that, "Puritan doctrine taught that all men are totally depraved and require constant self-examination to see that they are sinners and
unworthy of Gods Grace" (Wohlpart). In this one sees the key idea of self-examination which is exactly what Brown is doing, while also taking a physical journey into the woods
and the unknown. Waggoner also makes the interesting relationship between Browns woman Faith and Browns journey. Faith is his woman and clearly her name is symbolic of faith in
