Lottery by Shirley Jackson, The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The following paper examines briefly the symbolism that
could be seen in these stories, with each story discussed separately. The Lottery The Lottery is a very powerful and simple story that truly takes the reader by
surprise on the first reading. As one critic notes, "When the reader learns of the unjust and senseless murder for the first time, this knowledge comes as an extreme shock"
(The Lottery, Shirley Jackson). It is a story that symbolizes the perfect American town, with a community gathering, perhaps an annual picnic, and the traditional roles played by men and
women. For example, the men clearly take charge of things; the manner in which the community is run and overseeing the communitys affairs and plans. The women clearly stay at
home, do the dishes, and take care of children as clearly seen in the description of one woman who appears in the story: "Mrs. Hutchinson came hurriedly along...Clean forgot what
day it was...Thought my old man was out back stacking wood...She dried her hands on her apron" (Jackson). Clearly this town is symbolic of all that Americans hold dear in
their rural ideals. But, in this ideal community lies the danger of tradition. Tradition is generally a good thing, but not when done blindly and without reason. These people
