lived and the perceptions of the poet. Veronica Franco (1546 - 1591) wrote from the perspective of an educated woman in sixteenth century who was a courtesan who had many
wealthy and powerful clients (Rosenthal, 1992). The sonnets she wrote were not only a demonstration of her intelligence; they are also a reflection of her time. Unlike many other poets
she was honest and her writing is openly erotic, an unusual trait for the time, even more so for a female writer (Rosenthal, 1992). It is in this frank and
honest style that her poetry makes use of symbols and symbolism, sometimes in a very straightforward manner, with obvious meaning, and at other times in a more subtle manner that
takes a closer examination to appreciate the complexity of the symbolism. The approach taken by Veronica Franco is unusual for a female of her time, she is unafraid to
be challenging and the symbolism she uses reflects this self confidence in her to challenge and win by undermining the traditional views that are seen of women and love with
the clich?s of Petrarchan love poetry (Rosenthal, 1992). It may also be argued that the writing, including the symbolism also symbolized her freedom and lack of subornation to men that
