novel there is a sense of being trapped in one way or another, and also a sense that release of some kind is being sought after. Each character has personal
trappings, personal realities, that are often presented through powerful symbols throughout the play. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines some of the symbolism found in Tennessee Williams "The
Glass Menagerie." Symbolism/Imagery One of the first symbolic elements in the story occurs with the fire escape. The fire escape represents the bridge between the real world and
the fantasy world contained in the apartment where the family lives. It is a means of escape as well, which is related to the fact that it is, after all,
a fire "escape." One author notes that the fire escape represents different things to different individuals in the story. For example, in Toms case it is a way of escaping.
With Amanda and Laura however, it is the way into reality (Symbolism in The Glass Menagerie). In the case of Laura the fire escape is a means of escaping into
a part of her world, a world that runs from reality: "Both examples can readily be seen: Tom will stand outside on the fire escape to smoke, showing that he
