play with a cup and saucer, a brush and comb and a tractor and trailer give some insight into how play is fundamental to the cognition and psychosocial development. The video taped observation shows Matthew playing with a cup and saucer that are placed on a small table. It is evident that Matthew has had experience with these objects before and he mimics their functional use repeatedly, picking up the cup, for example, and pretending to drink from it. After each drink, Matthew makes the sound "ahhh," showing that he is satisfied after drinking the imagined tea. Matthew also picks up the saucer and pretends to drink the tea from the saucer, and also finds a spoon on the table and takes this and stirs the cup. In each of these different parts of his play behavior, there are recognizable elements that relate to his conditioning, to a social perspective that relates directly to the objects. This is linked to basic views on early cognitive development. Bandura (1977) argued that cognitive and information-processing capacities that mediate intellectual development and social behavior are inherently linked to learned and imitated processes. Piaget (1954), in contrast, proposed two processes linked to these schemas, assimilation and accommodation, assimilation being a process of experiential influence that can be compared to Banduras initial perceptions of social learning, and accommodation existing as the process of reapplying assimilated knowledge and schemas to different elements, objects or interactions.
