Old South and the New South, a story of male domination, a story of insanity and loneliness, and a story about a simpler time. The following paper examines the significance
of the rose in the title of this story, with a focus on how the rose is connected with Homer and love that Emily never received. Symbolic Meaning
of the Rose in A Rose for Emily It should be understood that there is never really the mention of any rose in the story itself. AS such the title
stands as a symbolic representation of some thought, emotion, or reality. The only time in the story when a rose is actually alluded to is when the narrator states that,
"A thin, acrid pall as of the tomb seemed to lie everywhere upon this room decked and furnished as for a bridal: upon the valance curtains of faded rose color,
upon the rose-shaded lights" (Faulkner). In this instance the rose is only mentioned in reference to the color, which is more of a pink color. And, the connection to almost
deathly lit environment gives the mention of rose a very sad and lonely tone. While people may, at first, immediately think the rose is red that the title speaks
of there are many possibilities. And in looking at the possibilities it is important to understand something of the symbolism associated with roses. For example, a red rose could signify
love, true love. Or it could represent respect (AstroStar). A deep pink rose could indicate appreciation or gratitude and a light pink rose could mean admiration or sympathy (AstroStar). White
