The Disquieting Muses. This is a very powerful poem wherein the narrator is pleading to know why her mother somehow connected her with these muses, women who have apparently always
been in her vision somewhere, old women, hags, witches. The poem states: "Mother, whose witches always, always/ Got baked into gingerbread, I wonder/ Whether you saw them, whether you said/
Words to rid me of those three ladies/ Nodding by night around my bed,/ Mouthless, eyeless, with stitched bald head" (Plath 11-16). Such images seem to clearly indicate that this
was not just one simple dream that Plath had, but an ongoing connection or vision of these three old women, these three witches who continued to appear before Plath throughout
