an adult life a life that is restricted and made false by the hypocritical posturing of society. Like Holden, the misfit male teenager in J.D. Salingers Catcher in the Rye,
Esther has to cope with her alienation. However, in addition to the problems of adolescence encountered by Holden Caulfield, Esther has to
face her own particular sexual crisis, which is intrinsically related to the problems of being female in the 1950s. Esther has to wrestle with difficult choices?a career or marriage and
motherhood. At that time, it was either one or the other, and women were expected to choose rather then attempt both. Esther had
to cope with the intricacies of the "double standard," which stated that men could have sex before marriage, but a woman was expected to stay "pure." Esthers preoccupation with sex
may appear at first glance to be as intense as Holden Caulfields but Plath makes it clear that women have to deal with much more then the physical act. Sex
becomes a defining issue on how they will run their lives and perceive themselves. Esther is the one of twelve winners of a fashion magazine contest whose prize is the
opportunity to work in New York City for a month. She is a sensitive and highly intelligent woman. She wants to be accepted by her peers. She wants to fit
in and have a normal relationship with a man. In New York, Esther makes friends with Doreen, a sophisticated and sarcastically aloof Southern girl who has also won a job.
