Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page overview of the possible causes of the September 2, 1998 crash of the McDonnell-Douglas MD-11 Swissair commercial flight from New York.
Examines possible electrical problems and relates these to inadequate
testing procedures and fire retardant qualities of the acoustical
insulation blanket material used to insulate the aircraft from outside
sound and temperatures. Although not the cause of the fire, this material appears to have been a major source of combustible material which allowed the fire to progress excessively. This finding has resulted in revised testing and material standards. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
