the way it has been used politically and the manner of its portrayal in the media. Many institutions will claim to have had an impact, from ecocentric organizations such as
Greenpeace to the major international influences such as the G7. However it may be argued that over time, one of the most important influences has been that of the United
Nations, gradually influencing and impacting the policies of many others. The result is the position today where there is a high level of awareness of the importance of sustainability goals.
Sustianbilty is an interesting concept, different definition exist, one of the best is that of the Bruntland report (1987), where it is stated that "Sustainable development is the development
that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future". This is a broad dentition, in the past it may be argued as being anthropocentric,
focusing on human needs rather than the needs of the broader environment (Purser et al, 1995). However, in recent years there has been a change in attitude as a greater
appreciation of the way different elements of the environment are interdependent so the harm created which may or may not impact on future generations is less delineated. The way the
United Nation has impacted on the geo-political environment can be seen as both direct and indirect. The United Nations (UN) is not an environmental group. The first step to
