exhibited with their initial start-up. Herb Kelleher and Rollin Knight saw a niche in the industry and decided to fill that void (Southwest Airlines Spirit, 1996). Entrepreneurial ventures have a
far greater chance at long-term success when they see a real need and meet that need. King was one of Kellehers law clients and it was initially Kings idea but
they went forward together to make the dream become a reality overcoming numerous legal and political challenges. The idea was formulated in 1967 and the first flight took off in
1971 (Southwest Airlines Spirit, 1996; Quick, 1992). Southwest began by providing flights within the state of Texas. Today, it is a national airline. It has been the recipient of
numerous awards in both the industry and in business, in general. It won the Triple Crown in 1988; that means it had the highest scores in baggage handling, the best
On-time record and the fewest complaints from customers all based (Quick, 1992). The award is based on monthly performance. The first one they received was for March 1988 but they
won it again in February 1989, February 1990, March 1990, December 1991, March 1992, and May 1992 (Quick, 1992). No other airline has received the triple at all. Southwest has
not so much changed over the years as it has strengthened their corporate culture and their performance. The culture is what allows this company to continue to exceed the performance
