A Jury of Her Peers a year later; it is virtually word-for-word, and both versions are amazingly subtle examinations of human motivation. This paper considers the symbolism in the play
and how it indicates the inequalities Mrs. Wright suffers. Discussion The plot is easily summarized: a country woman, Mrs. Wright, is arrested on suspicion of killing her husband (Holstein). The
following morning, the county attorney, along with the sheriff, a neighbor, and the wives of the latter two men, return to the farm, looking for evidence (Holstein). During the play,
the women "accidentally turn up the evidence which the men seek in vain, and the women decide to keep quiet about their discovery" (Holstein 282). Without firm evidence to suggest
a motive for the crime, the woman will have to be released. The interesting point in the play is not that the women find the evidence, but how they do
so and why they decide to keep silent about it. Thats where the symbolism comes in, and this play is particularly rich in it. It starts with the title, which
refers not only to the things that the men find in the house and dismiss, but to the women themselves. There is a "fundamental difference" as well in the actions
of the men and women, a difference "grounded in varying understandings of the home space" (Holstein 282). When the men come to the farm house, they consider it to be
the scene of a crime; when the women come to the place, they consider it a home (Holstein). The two varying perspectives lead to different investigatory methods, and to very
