lead to paralysis, communication problems, visual impairment, memory deficits, and, in severe cases, death. Emotional and psychological problems, such as depression, may also occur both as a result of the
stroke or later when the patient must deal with a sometimes long and tedious recovery process. While it is clear that the stroke patient faces many obstacles on the journey
to recovery, family members also face many challenges in their efforts to help their loved one heal. In the acute treatment stage immediately
following a stroke, spontaneous recovery of lost or damaged faculties in varying degrees may occur. After the immediate crisis of keeping the patient alive is resolved, longer-term processes of rehabilitation
toward independence and reintroduction into the community begin. Rehabilitation is available to assist stroke patients in regaining their abilities. Types of rehabilitation may be in-patient programs like those in hospitals
or nursing homes, outpatient programs at local facilities, or home-based programs where the patient lives at home and professionals come in to provide rehabilitation there (AHCPR 5). The last stage
in treatment involves helping the patient return to the community. If rehabilitation has occurred for the most part in the home, this process may be smoother than if not. Again
depending on the severity of the stroke, reintroduction may be a lifelong process. It is particularly at the rehabilitation stage of treatment that
